Some blooms need space to spread.

Experts say these flowers fail in containers, avoid them for a healthy garden.

 1. Black-Eyed Susan

Spreads fast, roots run deep, and pots cause mildew. Better in open soil.

 2. Joe Pye Weed

Grows tall and thirsty. Pots dry too quickly and topple easily.

 3. Coneflower

Roots get cramped in containers. Stress from uneven watering weakens them.

 4. Milkweed

Deep taproots hate being confined. Needs ground space to thrive.

 5. Bee Balm

Spreads aggressively and gets mildew in pots. Too crowded for containers.

 6. Hollyhock

Reaches 6–8 feet tall. Pots can’t support their height or prevent rust.

 7. Delphinium

Tall with deep roots. Needs steady moisture and strong soil support.
